Ake

Aké is a mid-sized Maya archaeological site in northern Yucatán, about 35 km east of Mérida, with origins reaching back to the Early and Middle Classic period (roughly 250–600 CE). The site is notable for its unusually massive stone columns crowning the main temple platform — a structural form rare in the Maya world and possibly indicative of contact with other Mesoamerican cultures. Unlike the heavily visited ruins of Yucatán, Aké remains largely off the beaten path: overgrown paths, minimal visitor infrastructure, and an active sisal hacienda still operating within the site boundaries give it a raw, unmediated character that more developed sites have long since lost.
