Aladža mosque

The Aladža Mosque in Foča, built in 1550, was considered one of the most architecturally significant Ottoman mosques in the European part of the Ottoman Empire — the region then known as Rumelia. In July 1992, it was deliberately blown up during the Bosnian War, an act of cultural destruction that drew international condemnation. Painstaking reconstruction based on original plans began in 2016 and was completed in 2019. Visitors today encounter a carefully restored domed structure with traditional Ottoman brickwork and interior ornamentation — a living testament both to 16th-century Islamic architecture and to the resilience of the Bosnian Muslim community in the aftermath of war.
