Memorial to Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War

The Alyosha Monument is a 35.5-meter figure of a Soviet soldier standing on a hilltop in Murmansk, dedicated to the defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Second World War. Unveiled in 1974 in the Socialist Realist style, it is one of the most prominent war memorials above the Arctic Circle in Russia; locals affectionately named it 'Alyosha', a diminutive of the Russian given name Alexei. The Arctic Front was strategically vital: Murmansk's port never fell to German forces and served as the critical entry point for Allied convoy supplies throughout the war. From the statue's base, visitors have a wide view across the Kola Bay and the Northern Fleet's harbor installations, making it one of the few genuine panoramic vantage points the city offers.
