Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe

The Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians were first inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2007 and have since expanded to cover 92,023 hectares across 18 European countries, with roughly 30 percent of that area lying in Ukraine. These forests represent some of the last stands of largely undisturbed European beech woodland, growing continuously since the end of the last Ice Age with minimal human interference — making them a living laboratory for natural forest succession. The Ukrainian sections stretch through the Carpathian mountains in terrain that remains difficult to access, which is precisely what has preserved their primeval character. Visitors who reach these areas encounter centuries-old beech giants, exceptional deadwood density, and a biodiversity benchmark that managed forests can no longer match.
