Ancienne abbaye

The Abbey of Montivilliers, located roughly ten kilometres northeast of Le Havre in Seine-Maritime, traces its origins to the 7th century and lent its name to the town that grew around it. In the Middle Ages it functioned as a prominent Benedictine nunnery and one of the most influential religious institutions in Normandy, before being dissolved and repurposed during the French Revolution. The surviving complex displays Gothic church architecture alongside earlier Romanesque elements, with a restored cloister that preserves the spatial logic of medieval monastic life. Classified as a French historic monument, the abbey now welcomes visitors and offers a contemplative counterpoint to the postwar modernist cityscape of nearby Le Havre.
