Basilique Sainte-Thérèse

The Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse in Lisieux is one of the largest churches built in the 20th century and the second most visited pilgrimage site in France after Lourdes, drawing over two million visitors annually. It is dedicated to Thérèse of Lisieux (1873–1897), a Carmelite nun canonized in 1925 and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997, known for her doctrine of the 'Little Way' of spiritual childhood. Construction began in 1929 and the basilica was consecrated in 1954, built in a neobyzantine style with a commanding central dome and reinforced concrete structure faced in warm stone. The interior is lined with vivid mosaics, while the crypt below houses Thérèse's relics and draws the most intense devotional activity. Entry is free, the basilica is fully wheelchair accessible, and it is open daily from 09:30 to 19:00.
