St. Anne's Column

St. Anne's Column is a slender Baroque marble column standing at the heart of Innsbruck's Maria-Theresien-Strasse, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It was erected in 1706 to mark two events that both fell on St. Anne's Day (July 26): the withdrawal of Bavarian troops from Tyrol in 1703 during the War of the Spanish Succession, and the city's deliverance from plague. A figure of St. Anne crowns the Corinthian column, while reliefs of patron saints of Tyrol — including St. George, Vigilius, and Cassian — decorate the base. The protected monument stands in the pedestrian zone and serves as the visual anchor of the boulevard, with the Nordkette mountain range as a dramatic backdrop.
