Brenner

Brenner station sits at 1,371 metres on the historic Brenner Pass, the lowest Alpine crossing between Austria and Italy, and has served as the principal border station of the Brenner Railway since the 19th century. The line opened in 1867 as the first steam-operated Alpine rail crossing, linking the Habsburg heartland with northern Italy — a strategically vital artery for trade and troop movement alike. After World War I the Brenner became an international border, and the station a checkpoint between Austria and Italy until the Schengen Agreement dissolved passport controls in 1997. Today the listed building still handles regional rail traffic on both sides of the border, while the under-construction Brenner Base Tunnel, due to open around 2032, will eventually route long-distance trains deep beneath the pass.
