Bergisel

Bergisel is a 746-metre hill on the southern edge of Innsbruck that layers history, architecture, and sport into a single site. In 1809, three pivotal battles of the Tyrolean uprising against Napoleonic forces were fought here under Andreas Hofer, and a monument on the plateau still marks the site. The hill hosted ski jumping at both the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics; the current jump was rebuilt in 2002 by Zaha Hadid as a sweeping concrete arc with an integrated viewing tower and café — one of her earliest major built works in Europe. A forested footpath leads to the top in roughly 20 minutes, opening onto a panoramic terrace with unobstructed views over Innsbruck, the Inn valley, and the encircling Alpine peaks. FIS Ski Jumping World Cup events bring large crowds to the slope each winter.
