Auckland Harbour Bridge

The Auckland Harbour Bridge is an eight-lane steel road bridge stretching 1.15 km across the Waitematā Harbour, linking Auckland's city centre to the North Shore as part of State Highway 1 since 1959. When traffic volumes outgrew the original four lanes, two steel box-girder extensions — fabricated in Japan and nicknamed the 'Nippon Clip-ons' by locals — were bolted onto the sides in 1969, nearly doubling its capacity. Beyond its traffic role, the bridge has become an active attraction in its own right: the Auckland Bridge Climb takes visitors 43 metres above the harbour along the arch for sweeping views of the skyline and Hauraki Gulf, while a bungy jump operation launches from the underside. At sunset, the light across the Waitematā makes the crossing one of the more atmospheric drives in the city.
