Barrakka Lift
Liked by
The Barrakka Lift is a short vertical ride inside the fortification ditch of Valletta, connecting Lascaris Wharf on the Grand Harbour to the St. Peter and Paul Bastion and the Upper Barrakka Gardens above. A predecessor lift operated on the same site from 1905, built primarily for dockworkers who otherwise faced a steep climb into the city each morning; it ran until 1973 and was demolished a decade later. The current structure, opened in 2012, is tucked into the walls of Valletta's 16th-century bastions, making it an unusual piece of modern infrastructure embedded in Baroque fortifications. The ride takes seconds, but the payoff at the top is a sweeping panorama over one of the Mediterranean's deepest natural harbours. A €1 fee applies.
