Aulis

Aulis is an ancient harbour settlement in Boeotia, central Greece, roughly twenty kilometres north-east of Thebes. The site is chiefly known from Greek mythology as the place where Agamemnon assembled the Greek fleet before sailing to Troy, and where — according to tradition — he sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to Artemis in exchange for favourable winds. Euripides immortalised the episode in his tragedy 'Iphigenia in Aulis'. Physical remains are modest today — excavations have uncovered a sanctuary of Artemis — but for those steeped in ancient literature and history, the site carries a weight far beyond its unassuming appearance on the Boeotian coastline.
