This memorial marks the assassination attempt of 8 November 1939, when carpenter Georg Elser detonated a bomb hidden inside a pillar of Munich's Bürgerbräukeller during Hitler's annual address. Elser had spent months secretly hollowing out the column and planting the device — but Hitler left the hall thirteen minutes ahead of schedule. The explosion killed eight people and wounded more than sixty. Arrested that same night near the Swiss border, Elser was held in concentration camps and executed at Dachau shortly before the war's end in 1945. For decades his act was largely forgotten, overshadowed by better-known resistance groups; only since the 1990s has he been widely recognized as one of the Third Reich's most determined individual resistors. The memorial invites quiet reflection on solitary moral courage under dictatorship.
