Galera railway station

Galera station sits at 4,781 metres in the Peruvian Central Andes, making it the highest railway station in the Americas and one of the highest in the world. It stands on the historic Lima–La Oroya line, built in the late 19th century under American engineer Henry Meiggs in one of the era's most audacious infrastructure projects — crews drilled through more than 60 tunnels and scaled near-vertical Andean walls, with altitude sickness a constant companion. The station marks the mouth of the Galera Tunnel, the line's highest point, and is designated a Peruvian cultural monument. Arriving passengers feel the thin air immediately. The surrounding landscape of bare ridgelines and open puna grassland lends the place an austere, almost otherworldly quality.
