Howrah railway station

Howrah Junction, on the western bank of the Hooghly River, is among the busiest railway stations in the world, handling up to 600 trains and roughly one million passengers daily. Built during British colonial rule, the terminus operates 23 platforms across 25 broad-gauge tracks and serves as the primary rail gateway to the Kolkata metropolitan region. The station faces Kolkata across the Hooghly, linked by the iconic Howrah Bridge — one of the busiest cantilever bridges on earth. Inside, the concourse is a living cross-section of Bengali urban life: long-distance travellers, local commuters, chai vendors, and porters navigate the vast hall in a density of movement that has defined the station since the colonial era.
