Himeji Station opened in 1888 during the Meiji era as part of Japan's early state railway network and has since served as a key regional hub in the city of Himeji. In addition to JR mainline services, it functions as the western terminus of the San'yō Denki Tetsudō, a private regional rail operator. For most visitors, the station is primarily a gateway: Himeji Castle sits in a direct sightline roughly 1.5 kilometres north of the station forecourt.
