Kikonai Station sits in the town of Kikonai in southern Hokkaidō and opened in 1930 during the early Shōwa period. As the southernmost station on Hokkaidō, it serves as a transfer point between Hokkaidō Shinkansen services and the local Donan Isaribi Railway line. For most travellers it is a brief stop on the route between Hakodate and the Seikan Tunnel connecting Hokkaidō to the main island of Honshū.
