Lüderitz Railway Station

Lüderitz Railway Station is a Wilhelmine colonial building dating from 1904 and one of the few surviving architectural monuments from the German colonial period in Namibia. It was constructed as the terminus of the Lüderitz railway line, built to connect diamond-mining operations in the hinterland to the Atlantic harbour — a key piece of infrastructure during the German South-West Africa protectorate era. On 13 December 1976 the structure was officially declared a Namibian national monument. Today the station sits largely out of service, embodying the peculiar atmosphere of Lüderitz itself: a coastal town seemingly frozen between colonial architecture, a diamond-rush past, and the encroaching Namib Desert.
