Maputo Railway Station

Maputo Railway Station — the Estação do Caminho de Ferro de Maputo — stands as the architectural centerpiece of the Mozambican capital, built in 1895 in the Beaux-Arts style and widely considered one of the most elegant station buildings in Africa. Its curved dome and ochre facade anchor the Praça dos Trabalhadores in the Baixa district, a remnant of the city's Portuguese colonial urban planning. For decades a popular myth attributed the design to Gustave Eiffel, a claim historians have since largely debunked. Today the station sees only sparse rail traffic on its three southern routes toward Eswatini, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, giving the building an air of quiet grandeur: a vast, ornate space animated by occasional departures and the slow accumulation of decades of patina.
