Balve Cave

Balve Cave is a naturally open karst cavern about 90 metres long, carved by carbonate dissolution through Devonian limestone in the Hönnetal valley of the Sauerland region. Excavations in its clay-rich sediments have yielded more than 40,000 artefacts, placing it among the most significant Palaeolithic sites in the wider Siegerland and Sauerland area, with finds dating to the last glacial periods. Alongside this prehistoric significance, the cave holds the unusual distinction of being Europe's largest cultural cave venue — its natural acoustics and dramatic stone interior have made it a sought-after stage for rock concerts, theatrical performances, and open-air events for several decades.
