Bargala

Bargala is an ancient ruined city in eastern North Macedonia that rose to regional importance as a fortified settlement in the late Roman province of Macedonia Salutaris. Excavations have uncovered early Christian basilicas, Roman fortifications, and architectural remains dating from the 4th to 6th centuries AD, including a three-nave basilica with preserved spolia and mosaic floors. The city was destroyed in the 6th century by Avar raids and earthquakes, after which it sank beneath the earth and faded from historical memory. Today Bargala is an active archaeological site with exposed masonry and mosaic fragments accessible to visitors, though without permanent visitor infrastructure — it remains a quiet destination for those with a serious interest in Roman and early Christian archaeology.
