Basilica Cateriniana di San Domenico

The Basilica di San Domenico is a 13th-century Gothic mendicant church perched on a hill at the western edge of Siena's historic centre, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though dedicated to Saint Dominic, the church is inseparable from the cult of Catherine of Siena: in the Cappella delle Volte — where Catherine herself prayed — her mummified head is enshrined in a gilded reliquary, making this one of the most significant pilgrimage stops in Tuscany. The title Basilica minor, granted in 1927, is an ecclesiastical rank rather than an architectural designation. The austere brick interior, largely free of baroque overlay, reflects the deliberate simplicity of mendicant architecture and contrasts sharply with the ornate Sienese Duomo nearby. The church forecourt opens onto a sweeping panorama across the city's terracotta rooftops.
