Basilica di Santo Stefano

The Santo Stefano complex — affectionately known as the 'Sette Chiese' (Seven Churches) — is a rare ensemble of interconnected Romanesque and early Christian church buildings clustered around the northwestern end of Bologna's Piazza Santo Stefano. Its oldest core, the church of Santi Vitale ed Agricola, received the relics of two martyrs as early as 393 AD, making it one of the earliest Christian sacred sites in northern Italy. In the 5th century, Saint Petronius, Bishop and patron saint of Bologna, expanded the complex and added a symbolic replica of Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre — his own tomb remains inside the Basilica San Sepolcro to this day. The ensemble reached its current Romanesque form largely in the 12th century, with a cloister and open atrium. Visitors today pass through a sequence of interlocking chapels, courtyards, and naves that retain an atmosphere of genuine quiet despite sitting at the heart of the city.
