Arco Etrusco

The Arco Etrusco is one of the best-preserved ancient city gates in Italy, marking the northern entrance to Perugia's historic center. Built between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC in the Etruscan tradition, its massive travertine ashlar blocks were fitted without mortar — a technique that has kept the structure standing for over two thousand years. The upper arch and attic story were added during Roman times, as evidenced by a Latin inscription naming the city Augusta Perusia, a reference to Augustus's refounding of the city after the Social War. Today pedestrians pass through the gate daily, making it a living threshold between Perugia's modern streets and its medieval core, where the boundary between Etruscan stonework below and Roman additions above remains clearly legible to the observant eye.
