Baynard Castle

Baynard Castle is a lost medieval moated castle in the village of Cottingham, near Hull, with virtually nothing visible above ground today. Originally documented as Stutville's Castle, the fortification dates to the 12th and 13th centuries and was a typical lowland moated enclosure of the Norman period. Curiously, the name 'Baynard Castle' only appeared in the 19th century — a historical misnomer that has stuck ever since.
