Vienna Funeral Museum
Also known as: Bestattungsmuseum Wien
Unique museum of Viennese funeral culture with around 1,000 exhibits at the Zentralfriedhof.
The Vienna Funeral Museum, located in the basement of a funeral hall at the main entrance of the Zentralfriedhof in Simmering, explores the city's unique relationship with death and burial customs. Around 1,000 exhibits include historic hearses, coffin models, safety coffins designed for the apparently dead, and elaborate funeral accessories that reflect the Viennese concept of the "schoene Leich" – a grand funeral as a social statement. The museum was redesigned in 2014 and is operated by B&F Wien, the city's own funeral company. It offers an unusually candid and culturally rich look at how one of Europe's great cities has approached mortality across the centuries.
