Memorial to the Children Murdered at the Nazi Euthanasia Facility 'Am Spiegelgrund'

A field of 772 illuminated stelae on the grounds of the former Steinhof psychiatric hospital on the Baumgartner Hoehe in Vienna. They commemorate the children and adolescents murdered at the Nazi child-killing ward Am Spiegelgrund between 1940 and 1945. Young patients deemed ill, disabled, or uneducable by Nazi doctors were poisoned, starved, or used for experiments. Decades later their brains, kept for research by the Viennese pathologist Heinrich Gross, were finally buried. The stele field was inaugurated in 2002. The adjacent former Pavilion V houses an exhibition documenting the killings. Walking through the silent stelae you also get a sweeping view across Vienna from the heights of Baumgarten.
