Blackrock Castle

Blackrock Castle is a compact tower fortress perched on the bank of the River Lee, about two kilometres east of Cork city centre. Built in the 16th century as a coastal gun fort, its original purpose was to defend Cork Harbour from pirates and hostile vessels — a role that shaped centuries of modification and rebuilding on the site. Today the castle houses the Blackrock Castle Observatory, an interactive science centre focused on astronomy and space exploration, making it one of the few working observatories embedded within a historic fortress in Ireland. An on-site restaurant occupies the atmospheric tower rooms, offering views over the Lee and a distinctive setting that blends medieval stonework with contemporary dining.
