Belvelly Castle

Belvelly Castle is a compact tower house dating to the 14th or 15th century, standing on a narrow strip of land near the village of Belvelly in County Cork. Tower houses of this type were the signature fortification of Anglo-Irish lords in late medieval Ireland — vertical, defensible, and planted on ground that mattered. This one mattered considerably: it sits directly opposite the only road bridge connecting Fota Island to Great Island, where Cobh is located, meaning it once commanded the key landward approach to the harbor. The castle can be viewed from the roadside and remains a quiet, atmospheric remnant in the Cork Harbour coastal landscape.
