Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle is a 15th-century medieval stronghold built in 1446, rising from a limestone rock seven kilometres northwest of Cork. It is internationally known for the Blarney Stone, a block of limestone set into the battlements of the main tower. Those who kiss it — leaning backwards over the parapet guided by a staff member — are said to receive the 'Gift of the Gab', the power of eloquent speech, a tradition recorded since at least the 18th century. The surrounding estate gardens are as compelling as the tower itself: a Poison Garden of toxic plants, a Druid's Cave, and a Rock Close featuring ancient stone formations long tied to Celtic folklore and local legend. Woodland walks, a waterfall, and the atmospheric ruined walls make the site rewarding beyond the famous stone.
