Blue Impulse

This static aircraft exhibit in Ishinomaki commemorates Japan's Blue Impulse, the aerobatic display team of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Founded in 1960 with four North American F-86 Sabres, the team later transitioned to the Mitsubishi T-2 in 1982 and the Kawasaki T-4 in 1995, performing at major national events including the 1964 Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony. The team's home station, Matsushima Air Base, was severely damaged by the tsunami that followed the March 11, 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, lending the exhibit in nearby Ishinomaki a pointed resonance as both aviation heritage and disaster memorial.
