Estufa Fria

The Estufa Fria — literally "Cold Greenhouse" — is a hidden garden complex inside Parque Eduardo VII, close to Marquis de Pombal Square in Lisbon. Created in 1933 within a hollowed-out quarry, it houses three interconnected greenhouses: the Estufa Fria with Mediterranean and subtropical plants under an airy wooden-slat canopy, the Estufa Quente with tropical species, and the small Estufa Doce. Hundreds of plant varieties, waterfalls, goldfish ponds, and shaded walkways create a surprisingly lush world in the middle of the city. Entry is inexpensive, the grounds are rarely crowded, and it is cherished by insiders as one of Lisbon's finest hidden gems. The complex has been expanded several times since its founding.
