Tobar Bhríde, the sacred well of Brigid near Liscannor in County Clare, is among the most significant of the roughly 15 holy wells bearing this name across Ireland. Its origins predate Christianity: Brigid was a Celtic goddess of healing, fire, and poetry before medieval hagiography fused her with the historical Saint Brigid of Kildare — a pattern that makes this site a vivid example of Ireland's layering of pagan and Christian sacred geography. Pilgrims traditionally leave votive offerings here — cloth strips called clooties, rosary beads, and personal objects tied to the surrounding bushes and stones. The site is particularly active around St Brigid's feast day on February 1st, when locals and visitors walk the traditional Turas circuit. The well draws both devout pilgrims and those curious about the older, pre-Christian world the water still seems to remember.
