Liechtenstein Castle

Liechtenstein Castle stands on a rocky ridge at the eastern edge of the Vienna Woods near Maria Enzersdorf and is the namesake ancestral seat of the Princely House of Liechtenstein. First documented in 1136, the present structure is the result of a complete reconstruction by Prince Johann II beginning in 1873, after Turkish and Ottoman sieges had repeatedly destroyed the medieval complex. The tiny Principality of Liechtenstein between Switzerland and Austria owes its name to this castle, not the other way around. Today guided tours run year-round, and the summer Nestroy Festival stages plays on the large open-air stage within the grounds. The keep offers wide views over the southern Vienna suburbs as far as Schneeberg.
