Neu-Thierstein Castle

Medvedgrad is a medieval castle ruin perched on a spur of Mount Medvednica directly above Zagreb, built around 1300 as a defensive stronghold against Mongol incursions. After changing hands repeatedly over the centuries, the castle was abandoned following a 16th-century earthquake and gradually fell into ruin. The Croatian state later designated the site an official memorial to the victims of all wars — a stone altar with an eternal flame stands in the central courtyard today. Visitors reach it via hiking trails through the Medvednica Nature Park in roughly an hour, arriving at broad panoramic views over Zagreb and the surrounding lowlands.
