Château de Hohenstein

Château de Hohenstein is a medieval hilltop ruin perched at 440 metres in the northern Vosges foothills of Alsace, roughly 35 kilometres southwest of Strasbourg. Built around 1200, it formed part of the densely layered network of Alsatian noble fortresses and sits within direct line of sight of the Klein- and Groß-Ringelstein ruins, with the Nideck ruin barely a kilometre away — one of the highest concentrations of castle remains in Alsace. Classified as a Monument historique since 1898 and owned by the French state, the site is reached via well-marked forest trails and rewards the walk with views across the Bruche valley and the Vosges ridgeline.
