Château du Birkenfels

Château du Birkenfels is a medieval ruin founded around 1260, perched on a wooded Vosges slope roughly two kilometres southwest of Mont Sainte-Odile, near the Alsatian village of Ottrott. Built by the lords of Birkenfels to command the surrounding valleys, the castle changed hands repeatedly during the late medieval period before falling into disuse and ruin during the 17th century. It now holds classified historic monument status in France. Well-marked hiking trails lead through mixed forest directly to the site, where sandstone walls and a partly intact defensive tower survive. The elevated position opens up views across the Alsatian hills, making the ruin a rewarding half-day excursion, particularly when combined with a visit to the nearby Odilienberg pilgrimage complex.
