Burg Trausnitz im Tal

Burg Trausnitz im Tal sits on a 448-metre hillside spur above the Pfreimd river at the southern edge of the village of Trausnitz in the Schwandorf district of the Upper Palatinate. The medieval hilltop castle is considered one of the finest and best-preserved castle complexes in Bavaria, listed both as an architectural monument and an archaeological site — the latter designation reflecting documented medieval and early modern remains found beneath and around the structure. Its forested ridge setting above the river valley lends it an isolated, evocative atmosphere rare even among Bavarian castle ruins. Visitors who make the climb are rewarded with views over the Pfreimd valley and the rolling Oberpfalz countryside.
