Eltz Castle

Burg Eltz is a medieval hilltop castle rising above the densely wooded Elz valley, a quiet tributary of the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate, and has stood in some form since the 12th century. Its most remarkable distinction is continuity: the castle has been owned by the noble Eltz family for more than 800 years without interruption and was never taken by force — an extraordinary record among Rhenish fortifications. The structure blends Romanesque foundations with layered half-timbered additions built by three separate family branches simultaneously, giving it the stacked, organic silhouette that became Germany's image on a 500-Deutschmark banknote until 1991. A treasury inside displays original medieval gold- and silverwork alongside preserved suits of armor. Access remains deliberately unhurried — from the car park visitors walk around 20 minutes through beech forest down into the valley before the castle comes into view.
