Eltz Castle

Eltz Castle has risen from a dense deciduous forest above the Elz valley — a quiet tributary of the Moselle — since the 12th century, and stands as one of Germany's most architecturally layered medieval fortresses. Romanesque foundations support successive tiers of half-timbered construction added through the late Middle Ages, the result of a rare 'Ganerbenburg' arrangement in which three related noble branches built and inhabited the complex simultaneously. What sets it apart from nearly every other castle in Europe is an unbroken eight centuries of single-family ownership by the Eltz family — and the castle has never been taken by force. Its treasury holds original medieval gold- and silverwork alongside a well-preserved collection of armour. Visitors reach the castle only on foot, around 20 minutes downhill through the forest from the car park, and explore the interior on guided tours while parts of the building remain a private family residence.
