Pajštún Castle

The ruins of Pajštún Castle — known in German as Burg Ballenstein — sit on a 486-metre ridge in the Little Carpathians near the village of Borinka, roughly 20 kilometres northwest of Bratislava. Built in the early 14th century to guard trade routes through the mountains and later expanded in Renaissance style, the castle was abandoned after fires and sieges in the 17th century and has stood in slow decay ever since. It is only accessible on foot via a well-marked forest trail through mixed woodland, rewarding hikers with open views across the wine country south of the Carpathians. Little roofed structure remains, but the surviving curtain walls and keep give the site a distinctly atmospheric quality.
