Carltheater

The Carltheater was a Viennese suburban theatre opened in 1847 at Praterstrasse 31 in the second district, Leopoldstadt, named after director and actor Carl Carl. It was the successor building to the older Leopoldstaedter Theater, the most important Alt-Wiener popular stage. As director from 1854 Johann Nestroy premiered many of his own farces here; later, operettas by Offenbach and Suppe filled the programme, helping turn Vienna into a capital of operetta. Karl Valentin also appeared as a guest. The building was severely damaged in a 1944 air raid and finally demolished in 1951. A modern hotel now stands on the site; a plaque on Praterstrasse recalls the lost theatre.
