Leopoldstädter Theater

The Leopoldstaedter Theatre was, alongside the Theater an der Wien and the Theater in der Josefstadt, one of the three great Viennese suburban theatres of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Karl Marinelli opened it in 1781 in what was then the suburb of Leopoldstadt and turned its Hanswurst successor Kasperl into a Viennese folk hero. The house became famous for the repertoire of Ferdinand Raimund and above all Johann Nestroy, whose sharp-tongued farce Lumpazivagabundus premiered here in 1833. In 1838 the comic actor and director Carl Carl took over, had architect Eduard van der Nuell tear down and rebuild it in 1847 and renamed it Carltheater. A plaque on Praterstrasse marks the site of the now vanished building, which burned out in 1944 and was demolished in 1951.
