Fort Saint Angelo

Fort Saint Angelo occupies the headland of Vittoriosa (Birgu), commanding a sweeping view over the Grand Harbour at the heart of Malta's maritime history. Though the current limestone fortifications largely reflect rebuilding from the late 17th century onward, the site's military use dates back at least to the Arab period, and the Knights of St. John made it the nerve centre of their rule over Malta from 1530. During the Great Siege of 1565 the Knights held the fort against an Ottoman force vastly superior in numbers, a chapter that defines Maltese national identity to this day. In World War II it served as headquarters for the British Mediterranean Fleet. Now managed by Heritage Malta, the fort opens its bastions, underground passages, and medieval chapel to visitors, with terrace viewpoints over the Grand Harbour among the finest on the island.
