Misraħ Għar il-Kbir

Clapham Junction is a cluster of prehistoric parallel grooves cut into the limestone of the Misrah Ghar il-Kbir plateau in southern Malta. The grooves, up to 60 centimetres deep, run in bundles and cross at a few spots, reminding British soldiers so strongly of the rails at London's Clapham Junction station that the name stuck. There is still no scientific consensus on how they were made. Theories range from Neolithic sledge or cart tracks to natural erosion to ritual purpose. Dating estimates run from 4000 to 2000 BC. Some grooves run straight into the cliff face and stop at the edge, complicating the cart theory. Nearby is the entrance to Ghar il-Kbir, a karst cave once inhabited by cave-dwellers. The site is freely accessible and a sign marks where the grooves begin.
