Lascaris War Rooms

Also known as: The Lascaris War Rooms

The Lascaris War Rooms are a rock-hewn underground command centre beneath Valletta's Lascaris Battery, operational from 1940 and now preserved as a museum by the heritage foundation Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna. Established by the Royal Navy and RAF to direct Malta's sea and air defences during the island's prolonged Axis siege, the complex became the Allied Forces Headquarters for the entire Mediterranean theatre from 1942. It was from these vaulted chambers that Eisenhower and Cunningham coordinated Operation Husky — the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily — making the site one of the most consequential planning rooms of the war. Reconstructed with original plotting tables, maps, and period equipment, the warren of tunnels conveys the claustrophobic intensity of wartime command. The site is steep and lacks wheelchair access; guided tours are the recommended way to navigate the complex.
