Clara-Zetkin-Park

The Clara-Zetkin-Park lies in the Elster floodplain southwest of Leipzig's old town and forms part of the city's largest contiguous park system. The current grounds go back to the Koenig-Albert-Park of 1870, laid out in English landscape style by city gardening director Otto Wittenberg. In 1955 the park was renamed in honor of the women's rights pioneer Clara Zetkin and merged with the neighboring Johannapark and Palmengarten into the 125-hectare Central Culture Park. The parts became formally separate again in 2011, but the core retains the name Clara-Zetkin-Park. Characteristic features are the open meadows, the music pavilion, the Sachsenbruecke gathering spot where thousands meet on summer evenings, and the anglers' lodge on the Elstermuehl canal. In summer there is open-air cinema and festivals; in winter walks under the century-old oaks.
