Schwarzenberg Monument

The equestrian statue on Vienna's Schwarzenbergplatz commemorates Field Marshal Karl I. Philipp Prince of Schwarzenberg, who commanded the allied armies against Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 — the largest land battle in history before the 20th century. Emperor Franz Joseph I commissioned the monument; Dresden sculptor Ernst Hähnel designed it, and it was completed in 1867 in bronze on a heavy stone pedestal. The statue forms a deliberate urban axis at the northern end of the square, inadvertently creating a striking visual dialogue with the Soviet war memorial erected directly behind it in 1945 — two monuments, two eras, one plaza. It is listed as a protected cultural monument under Austrian federal heritage law.
