Dominican Church

The Dominican Church on Postgasse in Vienna's Inner City is one of the city's most important early Baroque sacred buildings. The present church was built between 1631 and 1634 to plans by the Italian masters Antonio Canevale and Cypriano Biasino and follows the early Baroque template of the Gesu in Rome. The 13th-century predecessor had been heavily damaged during the first Turkish siege of 1529. Inside, the powerful stucco ceiling by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla and the high altar with Leopold Kupelwieser's Glory of Saint Dominic stand out. Today the church is both a parish and the Greek Catholic cathedral for Vienna.
