Church of John the Baptist

The Church of St. John of God in the north of Warsaw's New Town is the monastic church of the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God on ul. Bonifraterska. Construction began in 1728, after the order was called to Warsaw in 1650 to care for the sick and mentally ill in its attached hospital, a progressive mission for the era. Like much of Warsaw the complex burned out completely in the 1944 Uprising and was only reconstructed in the 1950s. The restrained baroque facade displays pilaster articulation and a twin-tower gable. Inside, a side altar still commemorates the order's healing tradition. The church sits in the shadow of the busy New Town market square and is usually quiet.
