Bockenheim

Bockenheim is Frankfurt's classic student district, centered on the medieval Bockenheimer Warte tower and the nearby Goethe University campus. Before its incorporation into Frankfurt in 1910, it was an independent working-class town, and that unpretentious character has survived gentrification pressures better than most Frankfurt neighborhoods. Gründerzeit apartment blocks line streets where Turkish takeaways, decades-old corner pubs, and secondhand bookshops coexist in a density rarely found elsewhere in the city. During the university semester the neighborhood's sidewalk cafés and student bars fill quickly, making it the most lived-in stretch of the western inner city — visibly worn, but genuinely local.
